I guess what I am trying to avoid is buying something thinking I'm set and finding out I have to spend more for adapters and updates, or it doesn't do what I need.

I think even with the 12.2 my models are covered? But is there a better option for the money? Updates for these are a grand I hear so me not being a full time mechanic charging people for the diagnostic use, paying a grand after I buy the scanner if I wanted to update it fully doesn't make sense.

I can get a Snapon Solus Pro on ebay fro around $5-600 but the software is in the 12.2-14.2 range depending on listing. I read a thread here about the AutoEnginuity that they had issues and that AutoEnginuity pirated stuff from Ford, have they got better? If I went SO or PC based I don't need to pay for the latest update every year, I just want to be able to work on the cars my family has that I get the privilege of fixing when they break. Has anyone used any of these that have use other scanners like Snap On's or Matco's that can give me some info like what they cant do, pros/cons. There are other tools like the Autel, launch, AutoEnginuity, OTC. Plus powering a laptop from the car isnt recommended, where the Solus Pro can charge off OBD port.

I know there are PC based programs like Data Scan II, but having to keep a dedicated laptop and if you don't use a rugged one, you can damage it easily. I also have a Fluke 98 so I don't need the scanner to have a scope built in. I have Nissan Data Scan II on my Laptop which is similar but not the same as Consult II, there are some things it can do but I want to be able to do test and do more then Data Scan II has. what is what? Price jump from pro to ultra is allot, is the ultra better? Why would one choose one over the other? I read the Solus is a good tool, but they have Pro, Ultra, Elite, etc. I have researched a bit and I guess there are some SO scanners that are crap(Ethos,Modis, etc).

I would love the latest Snap on scanner but as I am not rich I cant afford it.

I have some 2007-2015 Nissan truck/suvs some 99-03 F250 Superduty, an 02 ford escape, and few others that I am looking to get a scanner that can do more than just code reading. I realize this is a loaded question and everyone has their own opinion, but hopefully I can get the answers I need.
